Nursing Beliefs
It is significant to admit the fact that health is the main component of life, and good health lies on the behavior of humans. Nursing is one of the noble professions that allow one to help in saving individuals’ health as well as lives. Nursing is very essential because it aids in promoting health, preventing diseases, and helping patients or invalids to cope with illness. People study nursing to be health educators and advocates for communities, families (Hamri et al., 2013), and patients and provide valuable emotional support to the public, for example, through counseling. Provision of high-quality care involves nursing beliefs. The beliefs drive the nurses into fulfilling their moral obligation to the society through promoting health and wellbeing. This paper, therefore, aims at exploring the professional belief system of nursing and would also apply one of the nursing theories that match the beliefs.
My Professional Belief System and/or Worldwide View of Nursing
My professional belief of nursing is that the profession should provide compassionate, empathetic, competent, holistic, ethical, and optimal care to the best of the nurses’ ability (Burridge et al., 2015). This philosophy or belief stems from the values that were instilled in me when I was growing up. The belief is convoyed by compassion, respect, and trustworthiness and that is what drove me to the career and keeps me going as I offer care to patients. I believe that the sexual orientation, ethnic background, and cultural beliefs and values must be respected and care providers must avert any form of segregation. I believe that care decisions have to be made in collaboration with the family and patient; and nurses must respect the inherent worth as well as dignity of everybody, unrestricted by consideration of nature of health problem, personal attributes, socioeconomic status, or cultural status.

I believe that nurses have the obligation to prevent, treat, and help patient recover from their conditions. It also the role of nursing to advocate for healthy living through campaigns and educational services that aim at creating awareness to the general public about the benefits or adverse effects of any behavior or action. I also believe that nurses should collaborate with other medical professionals to provide quality care. Collaboration among the nurses, physicians, technicians, and other healthcare professionals can greatly increase the team members’ awareness of each other’s brand of skills and knowledge leading to improvement, for example, in decision making (Hamri et al., 2013). It my belief that nurses’ efficiency should be enhanced through education and training so that they can have new and better ways of providing care to the clients.
Nursing Theory Best Matching My Values and Beliefs
Watson’s theory of ‘Caring in Nursing’ perfectly matches my values and beliefs. The theory states that nursing main role involves caring for the sick, preventing illnesses, promoting health, and restoring health (Watson Caring Science., 2017). It concentrates on health promotion, disease treatment, and most importantly caring. Caring encompasses care about and care for customers or patients. It relates to holistic care which takes into account professional expertise and knowledge as well as spiritual and psychological consideration of customers. One of the ways of ensuring caring is focal to the patients’ experience is endorsing Watson’s theory of caring as the guide or basis for nursing practice. Watson in theory underlines the importance of scientific and artistic expertise and knowledge in caring for the patients (Watson Caring Science., 2017). The knowledge and expertise to offer better care can only be attained through education and training.
The application of the Watson’s theory can be seen as the practice of being open to spirituality, creating environment which is healing and caring for basic needs, having a caring-healing practice, developing relationships which are helping-trusting, and the practice of authenticity, equanimity, kindness, and loving. The theory advocates for the tradition of empathy and caring, and encourages a more open and emotional way of caring for the patients in the healthcare facilities (Watson Caring Science., 2017). Engaging in spiritually and authentically with the patients and their family members allows the parties to have more positive experiences of healthcare environments (Burridge et al., 2015). The theory also underscores the importance of health promotions through campaigns in the prevention of illnesses. Health promotions helps in creating awareness, therefore, enabling the general public to informed decision regarding their health.
My Definition of Nursing Based on My Values, Beliefs, and Nursing Theory
Based on my beliefs, value, and Watson’s theory of human caring, nursing refers to a profession which promotes good health, prevents diseases, offers holistic treatment, restores health, and provide effective care for the ill. The nursing profession promotes health through advocacy. Notably, nurses play an integral role as patients’ advocates. Nurses spend most of their time taking care as well as interacting with patients and their families and create trust and therapeutic bond with the patients. One of the nursing actions that can contribute to advocacy includes education, care guidance, and provision of patient with information (Blais, 2015). The nurses are obliged to ensuring patient rights are maintained and voices heard as pertains to treatment. They also provide education and information on treatment and medication and aid in maintaining patient autonomy and values; and allow patients to make decisions of best interests. Advocacy through education does not only improve compliance and medical outcome but also promotes nurses’ awareness and knowledge on other societies’ traditions and customs. Through advocacy, the nurses help in preventing diseases and restoring health. They also provide holistic treatment through the administration of patient-centered care, therefore, promoting patient satisfaction and health outcomes.
How I Apply My Definition of Nursing to My Practice
I apply of definition of nursing to my practice through providing patient-centered care. I usually take my time to understand the patient’s problem and symptoms before diagnosis. In this process I do establish good rapport with the patient and the family members and offer them emotional support. This always results in trust which enables the patients to air their views. Most importantly, I take part in educating patients on the importance of healthy living. I create awareness on the adverse effects of smoking, alcohol consumption, physical inactivity, and poor diet on the body (Hamri et al., 2013). Most of the times, I educate people on vital signs of particular disease such as cancer or diabetes the benefits of visiting a doctor for check-ups. I also engage spiritually and authentically with the patients and their family members to allow them have more positive experiences of the healthcare environment.

Conclusion
Nursing is an important career path that plays a great role in saving lives. It is a profession which promotes good health, prevents diseases, offers holistic treatment, restores health, and provides effective care for the ill. The profession strives to provide compassionate, empathetic, competent, holistic, ethical, and optimal care to the best of the nurses’ ability. It provides information to the nurses on ways of ensuring optimal health through avoiding such things such smoking, alcohol consumption, and taking part in physical activity.
