Nursing Industry in Australia: Analytical Essay

Introduction

The purpose of this essay is to analyse the nursing industry. This essay will discuss the structure, role, function as well as other key regulatory bodies related to nursing in Australia. This will include the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA), Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA), and the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council (ANMAC). This essay will also discuss other significant bodies related to nursing. It will also talk about the skills, qualities, attitudes, and knowledge that is required to become successful in nursing. In addition, the essay will discuss the code of conduct and the significance of competency standards. Furthermore, it will describe the past experiences of the author, discuss the author’s strengths and weaknesses and how these may impact the success of the author’s role in the nursing profession.

Section 1: Industry

The role of the AHPR( https://www.ahpra.gov.au/About-AHPRA.aspxis) to support the 15 national boards that are responsible for regulating health professionals. The national board also protects the public by enforcing the standards of practice and policy within the nursing industry (Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency,2017). The AHPRA is responsible for the implementation of national registration accreditation across Australia.

The ANMAC is an independent accrediting authority for nursing and midwifery education under Australia’s National Registration and Accreditation Scheme. The ANMAC is comprised of representatives and directors from various stakeholder organisations, who are selected based on their skills, knowledge, and experience. The ANMAC is responsible for facilitating the development of content for accreditation standards in consultation with stakeholders and representatives from the professions (Australian Nursing And Midwifery,n.d). Similarly, the main function of the NMBA is to protect the public by providing guidelines and standard practices required for the profession (Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, 2019). The NMBA is to undertake the functions that are set by the National Health Practitioner Regulation Law, which is enforced in each state and territory. A major role of the NMBA is to develop guidelines which help nurses and midwives abide by the codes of conduct, standards of practice, and codes of ethics required by the profession. The purpose of the guidelines are to provide resources that guides decision-making under supervision, plans, and conduct regarding the health matter. To conclude, this will help nurses and midwives in making decisions with regards to registration and notification matters under a supervisory arrangement.

In contrast, the ANMAC has an additional role that goes beyond the development of nursing standards. The ANMAC also has the power to assess the qualifications and skills of nurses and midwives that wish to migrate under the Australian Government’s General Skilled Migration Program. The ANMAC is authorised to assess their qualifications by the Department of Immigration and Border Protection. The ANMAC is also responsible for determining whether programs of study for nurses and midwives seeking to practice in Australia meet the required accreditation standards, thus helping to protect the standard of health in Australia. Finally, the ANMAC facilitates the safety of the community by promoting high quality standards for nursing and midwifery education.

Section 2: Profession Skills

Nurses play a crucial role in the healthcare system, and thus it is important that they have the requisite characteristics and skills that are essential for nurses and midwives. One essential skill is communication. This includes actively listening to the patients and determining theirs needs or concerns. This extends to having the right attitude, honouring and seeking a person’s perspective, and having a genuine interest in getting to know the patients. It is important for nurses to be aware of the way they communicate with patients, as this can have a significant impact on the patients. For example, nurses may communicate too quickly, or use words that a patient may not understand. How we communicate with other people is important as it affects emotions, and as a result, this can affect the choices nurses may make. The nurse is often having to involve the family member of the patient and the hospital staff; thus, the ability to effectively speak and listen is highly essential. It is a necessity that nurses are able to communicate and collaborate effectively at all times.

Another important skill is professionalism. Professionalism is being accountable for one’s actions. For example, having a high degree of professionalism means taking responsibility when there is a problem, which involves taking action to resolve the issue. Professionalism also involves keeping personal emotions and information to oneself and respecting the patient’s needs. In order to do so, a nurse needs a solid framework of ethics which can provide the guidelines for personal and professional conduct. Often, nurses can become too familiar and friendly with their patients, to the extent that it breaches standards of professional conduct. Thus, nurses need to maintain an ethical boundary between themselves and their patients, so that the patient is respected and the relationship remains appropriate. Nursing communication 60 percent of adult Australians have low individual health literacy, which means they may not be able to choice effectively exercise their choice or voice when making health care decisions(Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2008 and PHN, 2015)

Nurses need to be professional in their approach towards their work. Whether it is meeting with and attending to patients, administering medication, or maintaining patient records, they need to do all of it in the most skilled and ethical manner.

As a nurse, you’re bound to deal with patients coming from different age groups, genders, races, communities, and socioeconomic backgrounds. It is important not to make assumptions or generalizations with respect to their appearance and instead focus on their illness, injury, or that which ails them.

Section 3: Personal Skills (200 words)

  • Identify your strengths and weaknesses in relation to your profession as a nurse.

My strengths to become a nurse is to care I find that my communication skills are of great help to in my career. i helping people and want to see them happy get better and its make me feel good. I love speaking with the family and the patient, this will help me build a strong relationship with them.having relationship is what will help me support them and encourage the partents and the patiens as they struggle with their health. My organisations skills are vital part of my abilty is towork as team is keeping the schecule organised and allow me to effectively use the time to help all my patients and colleagues. As a weakness, I belive that one of the biggest is how easy is to become attached to the patients. I remember working in Aged care facility and how difficult it was emotionally when of the resident passed . there is of the resident that I still think about who I careed for in dementia unit.

In conclusion, there are many nursing bodies that aims to protect the general public and provides guidelines for the profession as a whole. The AHPRA and nursing Midwifery Australia play a significant part in managing the nursing industry. Also, nurses requires the right skills and characteristics in order to be successful in the profession, such as communication and professionalism. Based on personal experience, there are weak spot that one’s needs to improve on. Such as, in communicating with a diverse people or situations.

One of the greatest barriers in achieving one’s goals is the difficulties in communicating with all various people. This is because of numerous ways that each individual uniquely communicates in different scenarios. Each of these scenarios requires a dynamic way of addressing the situation. Personally, communication skills will play a vital part when entering into the profession. It is important that each individual has the right skills sets and being accountable.
